Varieties of Guardialfiera stone by Laura Fiora and Luigi Marino
The Molise region is exclusively made up of sedimentary rocks yet the geological-structural context is characterised by complex geometrical relationships between the various litho-stratigraphic units: the oldest marine-originated rocks date from the Trias to the Plesistocene and continental depositions following the retreat of the sea early in the Quaternary Age. From a litho-applicational point of view, it is possible to distinguish lithotypes involved in the Apennine chain, including several varieties of building and decorative stone, as well as sediments dating after Apennine orogenesis, widely used to make bricks and mortar, as well as applications in the form of cobbles, gravel and sands....
